Background
My trip in the Sierras was coming to a close and I was looking for an easy, low BS day as I headed north. The June Lake loop road had just opened, so the E Face of Mt. Wood seemed the right choice. NickP joined me for a quick half day.
Trip Report
We parked at the pull-out for the Grant Lake marina and headed straight up one of the snow filled gullies towards the base of the east face of Mt. Wood. A few hundred feet of non re-frozen snow led to a broad plateau below Mt. Wood. We skinned to the base of the east face and booted/skinned to the summit ridge. Topping out took just over 3 hours for 5.5’k of vert. Simple, easy, and straightforward.
We dropped the east face, which was firm up high for the first hundred feet or so but then quickly turned to smooth corn. Initially we were considering linking up the N facing ‘Z-Couloir’, but after skiing the east face in great corn we opted for a second lap on the east face back to the car.
A nice, easy quick hit with no BS.
